What is a Good Bowling Score?

bowling score

Are you hitting the lanes for the very first time with the bumpers up? Maybe you’re an avid pro looking to dominate your local league. Or you’re just a friend bowling for a fun night out, hoping to avoid throwing gutter balls the whole time!

No matter who you are or what your skill level is, going back to the basics is always helpful. Understanding how to keep score in bowling is the best place to start. Plus, it’s nice to get a high score and secure those bragging rights. Luckily, bowling is easy to track once you understand the fundamental rules.

Read on to decode the bowling score sheet, and take the first step toward understanding how much a strike or spare is worth for a much better game!

How Do Points Work Anyway?

How do you keep score in bowling? If you’ve ever wondered why your score doesn’t seem to add up, we’re here to help. Bowling is scored based on how well you do during each frame. There are 10 frames in a game, and each frame contains two turns. This means a bowler gets two tries to knock down as many pins as possible before the next player steps up.

Points are awarded based on the number of pins that you knock down. You also get big bonuses if you knock them all down in your turn!

How Much Is a Strike Worth in Bowling?

Strikes are worth all ten points, plus you get to add your points the next two times you roll the ball. This is marked with an “X” on the screen.

How Much Is a Spare Worth in Bowling?

Spares also get you ahead of the competition by adding the points from the first roll of your next frame to the ten you already scored. If you’re watching the screen, you’ll see “/” for a spare.

How Is the Final Score on My Bowling Score Sheet Calculated?

Your score at the end of the game is the number of pins you knocked down in a frame plus any extra points for strikes or spares. Check out our bowling score calculator here for some extra help with your bowling score sheet!

Be Honest, Is My Score Any Good?

In this game, the higher the number on your bowling score sheet, the better! The absolute maximum number you can hit is 300, which is considered a perfect score in bowling. That is equal to 12 strikes in a row. However, this isn’t a score that most people commonly achieve. In fact, the odds of a perfect game for an average bowler are about 1 in 11,500!

When it comes to bowling score averages, you’ll need to look at an individual’s skill level. For obvious reasons, beginners usually have lower bowling averages than those who play in leagues, although there are some lucky instances where novice players get good shots in!

  • Beginner: A beginner bowler usually averages between 50 and 70 points in their first game
  • Average: Someone who is average can score between 130 and 150.
  • Better Than Average: Those who are pretty good at bowling can get up to 200 points during their game.
  • Advanced: At this point, you’re starting to reach professional-level bowling. Averaging anywhere over 200 shows that you’ve put in the time to develop skills in bowling.
  • Professional: On the more advanced end, professional bowlers will score in the mid-200s.

How Do I Improve My Bowling Score on My Bowling Score Sheet?

Bowling may look easy, but getting good at it takes some work. If you’re aiming for the 300 club on your bowling score sheet(or just want to beat your friends), here are some tips to set you up for success.

Wear the Right Clothes and Shoes

When it comes to clothing, you want things that aren’t too loose and aren’t too tight. Breathable, lightweight clothes that allow you to bend and move comfortably are ideal. For shoes, most bowling alleys provide rental shoes with smooth soles. Just don’t forget to bring socks!

Watch Your Form

Like any sport, good form matters in bowling, too. You want to build consistency with every single throw.

  1. Setup: Start on the row of dots just past the ball return. Step on the center dot with your non-dominant foot and hold the ball near your chest. Your middle finger, ring finger, and thumb should be in the holes.
  2. Approach: Most bowlers take 4 or 5 steps before they release the ball. Start with your dominant foot. As you step, push the ball out and let it swing backward naturally and forward for your release. Timing your swing with your steps helps.
  3. Release: As the ball swings forward, release when it comes past your legs (before you step onto the lane). Bend your knee on your last step to get lower to the ground and release the ball smoothly.
  4. Follow-Through: After releasing the ball, let your arm continue straight forward, and end like you’re throwing a cup over your shoulder.

Practice, Practice, Practice

The biggest help in improving your bowling skills is practicing! You can practice solo or with friends, but make sure you’re focusing on the things you’ve learned. That means no bumpers, using good shoes, and aiming well.

An important thing to remember when it comes to comparing bowling scores is that it’s not just your skill level that comes into play. The conditions of the day can also impact how well you play. For example, lanes in a professional tournament have different oil conditions, or the ball you choose might be weighted differently.

Join a Bowling League

If you really want to upgrade your game, consider joining a local bowling league! Playing with and against other dedicated bowlers is a great way to stay motivated. You’ll be sharpened by other players and get invaluable guidance from seasoned veterans. Plus, the friendly competition pushes you to refine your technique every single week.
